Mid-October seems like the perfect time for some end of 2018 reflection!
I am a total sucker for yearly goals especially when they pertain to mountains and other outdoorsy pursuits. Perhaps that is why 2019 has been a bit of a downer. No goals.
As for 2018, I set a doozy and set out to summit 100 peaks. Only rule was that the peak had to be at least 2,000 feet of climbing. I also wanted to go for 50 summits of my home mountain, Mt. Wire, since I came just short of 50 Wires in 2017.
In my early 20’s I met this guy who claimed to have summited Grandeur Peak over 100 times and I was like what a weird-o, this guy needs a hobby. Little did I know that I would someday be managing multiple spreadsheets of peaks climbed including one dedicated solely to peaks climbed by my dog (Roo wound up with 94 total summits for the year).
I hit 50 Wires in early November and just kept going topping out at 103 total peaks for the year. 2018 was the year of 56 Wires, 32 Grandeurs, a Clisham , 2 Deseret Peaks, 3 Hidden Peaks (1 on our wedding day), KRIZ , a Lionhead, 1 Aire, a Tukuhnikivatz, a Pheifferhorn, Gobblers, Sunset, a Punta Tre Dita aka the Dreifingerspitz, and the most gorgeous day of my life on SMOHOR.
Only 14 distinct peaks in 2018, yet 4 countries represented. Perhaps it is not too late to come up with a project for 2019. I still have the time go for 50 Wires again this year and then next year maybe shoot for a bit more variety or just go all in with Wire or perhaps find myself a hobby!
