“You have got to be kidding! Wool underwear? Why would someone ever… ?!?” If the idea of wool still conjures up that itchy, sweaty, requiring a turtle-neck underneath but still itching oh please just get this thing off kind of feeling, it has been a few too many decades since you have bought a new piece of wool clothing.
The “new wool” pioneered by companies such as Icebreaker, is super soft since they use ultra fine wool fibers rather than the course fibers of old that get under your skin and itch and prickle. Still the idea of wool underwear made me itch just thinking about it so I just had to try them.
First things first, Icebreaker in general is not cheap. At around 30 bucks a pair, the Icebreaker Hipkinis will set you back quite a few, although I did get a pair on sale at Backcountry.com for $19. Second, I could not believe how soft, light, and fine these undies felt, like way softer and lighter than a pair of cotton underoos. Third, I am overly impressed with Icebreaker’s animal ethics that they nicely detailed on the tags.
So far I have worn the Icebreaker Hipkinis on a few runs and around town. They are comfy, didn’t ride up, and they didn’t get the least bit stinky during a particularly hot and humid run. Plus they dried rather quickly (don’t put in the dryer) after a machine wash. I will update this post with more information on how well they wear over time because for 30 bucks a pair they better last for pretty much ever (I have now been wearing the same pair of Icebreaker Hipkinis for 2 years and they are still as good as new. I love them for skiing and trail running!). Overall they have earned a place in my travel/active underwear collection beside my beloved Patagonia Active Hipsters.
