“I am a picky eater. By that I mean, I love to pick the raisins out of oatmeal raisin cookies, the chips out of chocolate chip cookies, the white side off of black and white cookies, and the vanilla center out of Oreos.” ~Dylan Lauren
I first heard about Picky Bars on Lauren Fleshman’s blog and I have to say that being the PICKY eater that I am I was drawn to them solely by name. I ordered a variety pack from the Picky Bars website and was instantly and utterly hooked!
Lauren Fleshman is a two time 5K US champion, contributor to Runner’s World Magazine, awesome blogger, and co-founder of Picky Bars. Apparently her super triathlete husband has several food sensitivities so she set out to make him the most athletically balanced yet tasty bar so that his tummy wouldn’t get upset on long rides. If that is not the greatest demonstration of love, I don’t know what is!
After a year of grueling work, Picky Bars were born. It turns out Picky Bars were so tasty that all of their friends wanted some and demand was eventually so huge that they had to go PRO and start selling them online. Now Picky Bars are available to everyone at a few select retailers like REI and online.
Picky Bars come in FIVE flavors and I have tasted all but Laruen’s Mega Nuts. With a honey roasted sunflower seed butter awesomeness base, the Need For Seed flavor was by far my favorite with the All-In-Almond coming in for a close second. The Smooth Caffeinator, with its hazelnut butter base and 25mg caffeine boost, was both tasty and my afternoon pick-me-up favorite. The Blueberry Boomdoozle (formerly known as Runner’s High) was tasty but just felt like something was missing, perhaps it needs a little more blueberry or doozle and I had to pass on Lauren’s Mega Nuts since I can’t do walnuts.
Picky Bars run $2.75 a pop at REI and a little less from the Picky peeps directly so they are not exactly cheap. The cheapest way to get Picky Bars is by joining the PICKY CLUB where you can get 18 bars a month for 37 bucks. It is sort of like a CSA for bars and you get a free t-shirt that is super soft and adorable by the way.
I had been purchasing Lara and Kind bars through Amazon’s Subscribe and Save program so I am used to dishing out a monthly amount for bars. Thirty Seven bucks a month for 18 bars ($2.05/bar) is a little steep for me, but you get what you pay for and I am willing to dish out some extra cash for bars made from the best ingredients, with minimal soy content (less than 1%), no artificial sweeteners, and made with whole foods wherever possible not to mention supporting some pretty cool people.
Having plenty of Picky Bars on hand has kept me from eating crap in the afternoon at work. I wanted something to both satisfy my snacking needs and fuel my after work workouts and the Picky Bars did just that. I wonder if I will ever get sicky of these Picky’s, but seriously – try them out!
