Women’s Marmot ROM Jacket Review

March 17, 2014 by Amiee

Do you ever slip on a piece of clothing at your favorite gear shop and immediately walk to the checkout without the slightest thought? Well that is how I felt after trying on the Marmot ROM softshell jacket and wound up wearing it home from the store.

I was looking for lightweight wind- and water-resistant jacket for spring skiing adventures and the Marmot ROM could not have fit me any better. That being said, I am a fairly petite 5’2″ woman and the length was perfect. Other reviewers have complained about the jacket being too short making the ROM a good choice for us petite folk.Marmot Women's ROM Softshell Jacket

Having just run up Salt Lake City’s Mt. Wire during a High Wind Warning (we’re talking 40+ mph gusts), I can sum up the jacket’s wind stopping abilities in one word – awesome! The ROM is incredibly wind-resistant yet breathable at the same time and kept me plenty dry and cool.

The Women’s Marmot ROM jackets offers plenty of stretch for trail running, Nordic skiing, spring backcountry skiing, and hiking adventures. Special venting side panels are made with a little spandex offering you full range of motion, hence the name ROM. The jacket measures in at barely over a pound so it is super lightweight too and won’t add much weight to your pack during summer backpacking trips.

I have taken the Marmot ROM Jacket on a few hikes, trail runs, and backcountry ski adventures and I am totally impressed with the jacket’s wind-resistant fabric, breathability, and overall comfort. I can’t comment on the jacket’s water-resistant fabric yet, but I will update the post once I find myself out skiing during some flurries. Although I can say that the coffee I spilled all over my sleeve beaded up and wiped off nicely with a tissue!

The Marmot ROM is available in several vivid colors and I had a hard time choosing between the Midnight Purple and Team Red and ultimately went with the red.

The Details:

  • GORE WINDSTOPPER fabric is wind- and water-resistant
  • Venting side panels offer comfortable stretch for full mobility (ROM = Range of Motion)
  • Zippered handwarmer pockets, single sleeve pocket, and an internal zip pocket
  • Adjustable cuffs to seal in the warmth
  • Lightweight at 1 pound .05 ounces
