These shoes really crack me up! I affectionately call them my clown shoes and my “launchers” because they make my tiny feet feel huge and their rocker type design literally launches me off the sides of mountains.
The women’s Olympus are Altra zero drop awesomeness meets Hoka type floaty cushioning for the ultimate trail ride. I gushed about the Altra Lone Peak 1.5s in a previous post for single-handedly curing my plantar fasciitis so I couldn’t want to try out Altra’s new “Fully Cushioned Zero Drop Platform.”
To be honest, it took me a few runs to get used to the Olympus. My ankles are a bit wobbly after my long FAI surgery recovery drama and I didn’t immediately feel stable in these shoes. After a few runs, I felt increasingly more secure and have now worn them on a couple 10 mile runs and let me just say, it is so FUN to run downhill in these babies!
The max-cushioned Zero Drop platform and spacious foot-shaped toebox place your foot in a natural position so you can gain more speed and comfort while also encouraging natural movement which translates into more efficient running. The extra cushion provides a softer ride meaning less impact on your knees and hips so you can hopefully run longer and further more comfortably. I have found the Altra’s traction sufficient for dirt and rocky terrain and I can still feel the trail beneath me despite the extra stack height.
My road running speedster manfriend has been wearing the Olympus for recovery road runs and he says that these Altra peeps are really onto something. And he doesn’t say much so that really means something! I don’t think it will be long before more shoe companies start copying Altra’s wide toebox. Seriously, why wouldn’t shoe companies make shoes shaped like feet? Now that I have gone Altra it is hard to squeeze my wide feet into anything else!
